SQE 2 Top Tips

Passing SQE 1 is a huge relief, but the transition to SQE 2 comes around very quickly. The break between the two is very short. However, it is important to get a real break between SQE 1 and 2.

SQE 2 focuses on practical legal skills rather than test pure knowledge. I personally found this very challenging. It requires a change in mindset and a very different approach to learning.

1. Be prepared to change how you revise

Unlike SQE 1, SQE 2 is not just about understanding the law and memorising content. You need to be able to apply the law in a practical, client focused way. Adjusting your revision techniques early is important and makes a big difference.

2. Don’t neglect your SQE 1 knowledge

One of the most important things to remember is that your SQE 1 content still very much matters. The underlying law is essential for SQE 2, so continuing to revise black letter law alongside practicing skills helped ensure I was not caught out during my prep course or the assessments.

3. Organisation and preparation are key

Organisation is as crucial in SQE 2 as it is in SQE 1. Knowing the structure of each assessment, understanding timings and preparing templates for the written assessments helped me feel more in control. This significantly reduced my stress levels and allowed me to concentrate on the oral exams as those were more intimidating to me.

4. Treat the oral and written skills differently

The oral and written assessments require different skill sets and should be practised separately. Advocacy and interviewing require confidence, structure and clear communication. Written tasks demand precision, time management and attention to detail.

5. Do as many mock assessments as possible

Mocks are the most important aspect of SQE 2 preparation. It is no longer just about learning the content to be able to answer the SBAQs. Practicing under timed conditions is key to improve technique and confidence. I felt time went very fast in the exam so, it is important to feel confident with what you can do in the time.

It is important to remember this is simply what worked for me. There is no one size fits all approach to SQE 2. Take these tips and look around for more, adapt them to your learning style and be kind of yourself throughout. Remember this is the home stretch!
